Seeing whether You Have Wireless Capability is a Good Idea

Do you know whether the wifi functionality of your new computer has been activated? Many new laptops come pre-installed with the software and connectors necessary to enable you to set up a wireless network. Because these wireless networking devices are so cheap, the computer makers include them as part of the package and they may be found on the system specification list.
If you’re like the majority of people, you may not even be aware of how much RAM your computer has, especially if it came pre-configured with wireless capabilities. This is particularly true if you are unfamiliar with the concept of wireless networking. If you don’t pay attention to this aspect of the specs that come with the computer, you may find yourself rushing through the process of setting it up and getting it to function. Let’s have a look at some of the things you should look for if you want to verify the wireless capabilities of your computer.

The Intel Centrino is a microprocessor from Intel.

When buying a laptop, look for one that has an option for ‘Intel Centrino mobile technology’. If you have one of these, this is what you need! Unfortunately, computer makers aren’t very adept at describing what their products are or what they do with them. Simply put, it implies that your laptop comes pre-installed with wireless networking capabilities; you won’t have to do anything else. Intel Centrino is a marketing phrase that refers to a combination of the Intel Pentium M CPU with Intel’s Pro/Wireless card, which is sold separately.
If your computer is equipped with an Intel Centrino, it should be marked with an ‘Intel Centrino’ label somewhere on its case. However, if you don’t see this particular kind of sticker, you can still find out what your processor’s name is by right-clicking on the My Computer icon in the Start Menu (or on your desktop) and selecting “Properties” from the drop-down menu. Take a look at the language that follows the term “computer” in this section. It should inform you whether or not it has wireless capability.
In addition to extending the life of your computer’s battery, Intel Centrino technology enables a reduction in the size of your computer’s overall footprint. You won’t have any problems adding wireless capabilities to your laptop if you didn’t purchase an Intel Centrino laptop, but your laptop has a free card slot.

Desktop computers are computers that are used on a desk or table.

Desktop PCs are also available with wifi capability. For those who aren’t sure whether or not their desktop computer has a wireless connection, they should turn it around and check at the back. It is common to notice a tiny aerial antenna coming out of the rear of the computer, towards the bottom of the machine, indicating that a wireless connection is in use on the computer.
In the event that you do not find any evidence of a wireless device on the computer, it is still conceivable that you have one, particularly if the machine is relatively recent. It is not recommended that you open the back of your computer to see if it has wireless capabilities unless you are a computer expert. Instead, you should probably attempt to sort things out using the Windows operating system.

Using Windows to do a check

By navigating to the Device Manager in Windows, you can quickly determine your computer’s wireless capabilities. To begin, right-click My Computer and choose Manage from the context menu that appears. Now choose “Device Manager” from the drop-down menu.
In the device manager, you will be able to view a list of all of the various devices that are now connected to your computer or that are potentially connected to it. Look in the ‘Network Adapters’ section. Anything that contains the terms’ 10/100 ‘or’ Ethernet’refers to a standard network connection and has nothing to do with wireless communication. Anything else might be considered a wireless gadget.
You may find out what is wrong with a wireless device by clicking on its name in the Device Manager if you believe you have a wireless device but notice that it has a yellow warning flag next to its name in the Device Manager. Windows should be able to inform you as to why the device is not functioning properly. It is possible that the computer may recommend that you run its troubleshooter software. Before doing anything else, try this first.
It’s possible that the issue is with the driver. Insert the drivers CD that comes with your computer if this is the situation. If you can’t locate the drivers on the CD, you may always look for them on the internet. Looking at the manufacturer’s website can help you find out how to do this task. It is possible to attempt to look for the specific name of the wireless device in Device Manager from that point on.
Unfortunately, it’s possible that you don’t really have a wireless device at all. That’s a real shame. On the plus side, learning this now is much preferable than purchasing wireless equipment only to discover that it can not be used with your computer later. In any case, even if you were successful in locating a wireless device inside one of your PCs, you may discover that you need even more wireless functionality. Wireless technology, on the other hand, is becoming more affordable.
